Default Is there really effects of fetus from taking vicodin? - 01-03-2009, 07:24 PM

I am now 14 weeks pregnant and currently taking vicodin for 3 ruptured discs in my lower back. I have been taking them throughout my whole pregnancy but have been taking alot more lately (8 5/500's a day) since my pain is increasing. I worry that this may cause a problem with my baby. Does anyone know for sure??

Yes, your doctor. Stop playing on Yahoo answers, call your doctor's office and ask them.

Vicodin (generic hydrocodone--a relative of codeine--plus acetaminophin) is rated"B"for safety during pregnancy. That is the second-safest category out of 5. Either there is evidence that it is not problematic in animals and no human studies, or there is research that shows a problem in animals, but *not* in people. Hydrocodone is considered safer (by FDA rating) for a pregnant woman than codeine (codeine is a category"C").In any case, I would suggest talking to your doctor. There may be specific reasons that you shouldn't be taking the drug (or shouldn't have upped the dose) while pregnant, and there may be an alternative treatment.

Codeine ( the pain killer in Vicodin ) is a narcotic, and can have a sedative effect on the baby. It varies from child to child as to whether there will be permanent consequences. I'm concerned that a qualified physician prescribed a narcotic to you while you're pregnant. Please see your obstetrician asap to see if there's an alternative pain reliever that will incur further risks to your baby. Codeine is highly addictive.

No there is no effect, as long as your taking it prescribed by a doctorEmail if you need more help and information, I know for sure but will not put it on this forum.Doctors prescribe painkillers all the time in pregnancy its nothing to be concerned about, they will cut you down in the 9-10 month so that the baby isnt born with withdraw.
