there is a genetic component to it. the victim does not know it will happen until the first dose, then its too late.
alcohol is the best example, if you look into the original documents written by people who saw how alcohol affected Indian tribes you would know.
At first its psychological addiction, but that is enough to inspire drug intake to make physical addiction.
cocaine is just about pure psychological addiction. ever hear of skinner rats? There is a lever that the rat pulls down to get a reward. They hook up a line of tubing into the brain of a rat that carries cocaine each time the lever is pushed. Then the set the lever that each time it is pushed it takes an additional push to get a dose. A rat will pull the lever thousands of times to get a fix. Then they disconnected it, and the rat will continue pulling to up to 10000 times in the hope of a fix.
