Default What are some legal ways of dealing with chronic pain.? - 12-26-2008, 09:22 PM

I'm 32 years old, in the military and suffer from chronic pain every moment of every day. I've broken a wrist, foot, and toe which all still hurt. I have an achilles injury that has not healed in 2 years. Both my knees hurt. And I've had kidney stones for the last 3 weeks. The only medication I've been given is 50mg of Tramadol (Ultram). The Tramadol has zero effect on my pain. I've tried everything available to me within the military to better the health care that I am receiving, however anytime a subject such as mine is brought up you are thought of as two things: A liar and an addict. Instead of helping you, they give you the run around for sooo long that eventually you say f*ck it and give up.*Edit - Funny someone mentioned an antidepressant. I am on Wellbutrin for depression which in part I believe was brought on by pain and inability to do the things I enjoy.

If your pain is calssified as chronic one antidepressant might need to be added to your regimen. Ultram is more effective when taken with tylenol, but whach for overdose. A few other things that help are:Imagery: visualitzing the pain and work it out your bodyMeditation: deep thinking and relaxationRelaxation: ability to de-tense your bodyCompany: which emotionally support the pain and take your mind away from it.Prayer: belief and trust take the burden of pain away from you...............................

I'd suggest if you want to go the pharmaceutical path, you should seek out more and better GPs -- they will give you stronger and stronger medication until you are free of the pain (but likely unable to function as a normal human). your GP may also be able to refer you for surgery if it's appropriate. You could try Chinese acupuncture, which works on similar principles to drugs but without any of the side effects, however not all practitioners are equal -- it's better to get a referral from a friend who has had positive results.Another technique that is widely popular for pain relief is meditation, which uses the mind-and-body to control the pain / heal itself -- there are many different types of mediation, some of which are now used in dentistry and minor surgery, in lieu of pain killers. If it's legal in your state/country you could grow your own mary jane, as a cheap, low-risk alternative to conventional drugs, and by all accounts is a successful and popular long-term aid for chronic pain sufferers.

I would try to find a pain clinic. I have had more success there than anywhere else. Unfortuantly I don't have insurance right now so I can't afford to keep going. There are good doctors out there, it just takes some time to find them.
