Why is it that we look up to the players who have done steroids such as Mark McGwire, Sammy Sosa, Barry Bonds or other drugs such as Darryl Strawberry and his coke addiction but ban Pete Rose for betting.....Aren't we setting a bad example telling our kids it's ok to do drugs you'll still be allowed in the Hall Of Fame if it helps you put up the numbers but don't bet on the sport because you're making the profit then we're not so you'll be banned.....The way I look at it is that steroids can in a way help you hit homeruns fans want to see homeruns so they'll pay to see it and that puts money in MLB's pockets so it's ok.But betting isn't a profit for baseball so that makes it unacceptable....Any thoughts??????....................

Where the steroids issue is concerned, so far Bonds and Sosa have not been found guilty --- yet. McGwire either admitted or was caught or both, and then pleads the fifth amendment in the first hearing back in'04.McGwire will not get in on the first ballot, but may four or five years down the road if the voters forgive him for his transgressions. If Bonds and Sosa are found guilty, it will come down to whether or not McGwire gets admitted. If McGwire gets in and Bonds and Sosa don't, then you're opening up the"racial"can of worms.As much as I love Pete Rose and admire his hitting record(s), he was banned because he was guilty of gambling, just like all of the White Sox players from 1919 (Black Sox). If Rose is reinstated and allowed in the hall, then you have to open up the Hall to the any of the eight"Black Sox"players that were good enough to be inducted.For me, when it comes to both gambling and steroids, there is no way you can justify the allowance of either in any amateur or pro sport.

You are right, of course, but there are two insoluble problems: Bud Selig and the Players'Union. Selig is an incompetent owner's man who has already soft soaped the issue. The there is the players'union which will not allow the steroids users to be banned for life. They should allow it and the users should be banned but since when is a union about doing the right thing, especially a union of multi-millionaires. To hell with the fan, to hell with the kids who idolize these guys, and to hell with what's right. In 100 years there was just the one rule about betting and for 200 years having just 2 such rules -- PEDs being the other -- is not irrational or heavy handed. But no millionaire is going to risk losing his money for the sake of rightness.
