They aren't illegal per se...they require a prescription. Several medicines contain steroids as an anti-inflammatory.The reason that they are prescription only is that they can have some very nasty side effects, and therefore you need to be under a doctor's care to monitor the side effects.

you mean anabolic steroids, not steroids used for actual treatment of disease.they're illegal in professional sports because it's cheating, plain and simple. Barry Bonds and that whole crowd are cheaters.Most of the ones you can just buy are just street drugs that some guy made in his basement, and are not regulated, tested, and clinically trialed by the FDA or any reputable health organization. They do much more harm than they do good, and have next to no value theraputically for treating disease.That's why they're illegal
