Default How long is to long for a child to be on ritalin? - 12-21-2008, 03:37 AM

My aunt has two boys, out of control boys, and her 12 year old has been on ritalin for about 5 years, maybe more but I will say 5 to be sure. I have told her many times to talk to her doctor and get him off of them but she insists he needs them, well he needs something, hes way out of control, but I really think its their parenting skills that have made him this way, and he shouldn't be punished by taking ritalin. Should I stay out of it, or try to get her to talk to the doctor and get him more help on his behaviour and get him off the ritalin? Hes an awesome kid when hes with me, but at home hes bad.

Her mother has been using ritalin on him for years, and if she insists that he needs them and refuses to see a doctor or counselor about this, then the best that you can do is demonstrate your style to her when he is in your care and discuss the differences in his behavior.Ritalin - easier than parenting.

I don't think any kid should be on Ritalin, people would rather drug their kids than deal with their behavioural problems. Try to get her to talk to her doctor, it could be a food allergy or intolerance.

i can surely say that i dont believe in child medication...there isnt too much u can do but to read up on side affects of long term ritalin use and the dependency that it brings upon a child and an adult...bc not only now does she depend on the meds to take care of her child... the child will think and learn that he cant live"normally"without them... and thats a horrible way to be and to feel...ps... what about addiction... ritalin is like a tranq i mean its so 100% possible to become addicted to it jsut for its affects of feeling screwed up as opposed to thinking it makes u a better person...i totally agree about parenting.. bc it does mean a lot..but maybe if u like do some research on the med.. and"accidentally"leave it around for her to read she might get it..if not.. u can pray for the best of the child

have you been a parent long??i dont think you have the right to condone her parenting.sometimes kids are out of control through no fault of parent.only the parent knows the full extent.instead of telling her to get the boys off the drug. offer ways of help.my son is nearly 6. he is under a family dr and currently having test for his behaviour. he can not help the way he is. it is not my fault the way he is either. i am doing everything in my power to help him. and it is never enough. i suggest you be more caring. if your a new mom, one day u will understand the stress kids put you through. i love my son. i do not love his behaviour., i appreciate support not put me downs

Sometimes in the family situations, the family member finds it harder to hear someone else's opinions about the family members. I suggest to ask your doctor for the name of psychologist and leave the name of psychologist at your aunt's house. One day she might look at it, probably will question about it. Hoping for some yahoo members with medical background help you more on this.
