He should probably talk to his doctor about it, if he is serious about quitting. His doctor could get him into a treatment program. One type of program is a methadone clinic. What they do is substitute methadone, which is longer lasting, but less addictive, and doesn't produce the same"high", for the drug the person is taking. They do this in many people who are abusing narcotics. Eventually, they would wean him off the methadone. There are also other types of drugs available that work similarly.
