Default I think I'm addicted to oxycontin. What should I do? - 02-01-2009, 01:42 AM

I'm seventeen, male, and just recently crashed my car into a pole. I broke my femur, tibia, and knee. For the first two weeks of recovery, my pain was treated with oxycodone. Today was my first day of transition from oxycodone to tylenol 3. I have felt really down and unmotivated all day, not to mention the excruciating pain along with it. What I'm experiencing seems to be a combination of withdrawal and not being used to the pain that my previous prescription aided completely. Come Monday, I'll have to go to school and do my best without oxycodone, and I think this will be an incredible obstacle to face. Does anyone have any suggestions for me to try and not want this drug anymore? I crave the relief it provides, and I can't have it anymore because it isn't available. Thank you.

Sorry about your accident. Talk to your doctor. Get help. Don't be Courtney Love. Seriously, as you are seeing, good effective pain killers are very addictive. Get help and good luck to you.

Explain to your doctor what you are going through and maybe he will prescribe something stronger to help with the pain more. If you are experiencing withdrawal symptoms, then you may have to ween yourself off of the oxycontin.

Explain how you're feeling to your doctor. Opiate tolerance and dependence can come on really quickly. You have to taper down the dose to ease the withdrawal, and then figure out if you're craving actual pain relief or the high. If you're craving the high, tell your doctor who can recommend better medications and support groups.

First of all oxycodone is not oxycontin. Oxycontin is the long-acting preparation of oxycodone, and depending upon the severity of injury and associated pain, may be useful in your case, or not. What you complain about is not addiction, but ongoing pain not well-controlled with the codeine, which for much of the population is a lousy painkiller. You shouldn't have to suffer all the time, and if handled responsibly, you shouldn't become addicted to narcotics, either. I strongly suggest that you seek the help along with the consent of your parents of a competent Board Certified Pain Management specialist near you.

I know how you feel becuse I am a recovering addict but now I work in a drug and alcohol counselor and I detox people daily. I do not know how long you were on them for but most doctors know that if you take them for a long time then you are going to have a bit of wiothdrawel because you may not be addicted but you may be physically dependent. Which are two completely different things. The main question is this....did you take the pills the way they were prescribed or did you take more than you should. If you were abusing them and taking more than you should have then yes you probably are an addict. If you were taking them as prescribed and now are having detox symptons then you were only physically dependent. Major detox is when you are having the cold sweats having diarrhea, runny nose and alot of sneezing and immense stomach pains and you cant sit still, so if you are not experiencing those feelings then you will be okay. If you are having those feelings then maybe you should check yourself into a detox but if not then you will be okay in a couple days, at most 3 days...so hang in there. If you need anything else please e mail me and I will be happy to give you some more info.
