Default how whould I have a negative drug test on opiates when I do take my pills? - 12-29-2008, 10:51 PM

I take all sorts of meds right now...blood pressure, nerve damage pills, and opiates. The doctor made me sign a paper so he could drug test me...going in I didn't think I had a problem because I was taking all my pills the way I am supposed to. After the test it came back negative for the pain pill. It came back that I am taking speed, and no opiates. The second one came back negative for opiates. This goes on a record somewhere and I was told that I would no longer be aloud to get a prescription for them or any narcotics anymore. I have a cist on my back and the nerve is pushing on it causing alot of pian. I am going through pain management but it is not helping much. Please can you give me advise or answers.

My advise to you is to get a second opinion from a different doctor since you are doing nothing wrong. Then you can throw it back in the other doctors face and even possibly begin a law suite. Good luck

How exactly did speed show up then? That is probably the reason the office is refusing to prescribe narcotics to you. Before going to another doctor for narcotics (which looks like doctor shopping), I'd suggest talking with your doctor again. Figure out exactly what happened and why they will not prescribe more pain medication.Doctors are liable for what they prescribe. If they feel that the person is abusing or selling, they will stop prescribing to make sure that they are not party to something illegal.Good luck with figuring what is going on.

sounds to me like there was a lab error... like maybe the results had the wrong name on them. It just doesn't make sense, particularly since you ARE taking your opiates. Trust me, that kind of thing does happen every now and then.By the way, in response to the first answer - there wouldn't be any grounds for a lawsuit. you'd have to be able to show that the doctor was grossly negligent AND that you suffered harm from it. The doctor was just doing what EVERY other doctor would do based on the results of the test. And there's no reason to"throw it back in his/her face."We don't want to see our patients flunk drug tests - your doc would probably be glad to find out that you are, in fact, complying with your contract.

The drug testing you are describing is generally included as part of a Urine Drug Screen. This test is usually performed in the Clinical Chemistry Department in a hospital laboratory or in Toxicology in a reference laboratory."Speed"as you refer to it, is a drug in the methamphetamine/amphetamine group of drugs. Toxicology testing in todays world is VERY specific and cross-reactivity with other drugs are infrequent. Most companies that manufacture instrumentation to test for drugs must satisfy FDA guidlines for high levels of sensitivity(how much/little it can detect) and specificity (testing for the specific drug group). Most drug tests do have a half life of how long it remains in the body. How log after you took the medication was it before you had the drug screening? It may have dropped below the thresh-hold of detection. If the test is confirmed by GCMS chromatography the physician and the laboratory's data are relatively air tight, unless the sample was not collected via chain of custody.
