Default Can you share your experience in how you dealt with someone taking morphine? - 01-21-2009, 12:10 PM

A friend of 9 years has been taking oral morphine for her pain from post-polio syndrome for maybe a year. She's aware of the addiction possibility so she's showing responsibility. Her personality has changed to the point where it sends me over the deep end sometimes. My patience shreds. And of course she doesn't know how annoying she is. Any experiences?

It's difficult when someone you care about undergoes a personality change. Are you sure it's the med and not the pain or something else? You will have to decide where that line in the sand for you is. I don't say this to be mean, but if you want to keep the friendship and be supportive then you are going to have to set some limits on what you will accept and not accept. You can do this simply by limiting the amount of time you interact with your friend.Good luck.

I use to be addicted to morphine for about 16 months...took it everyday like clock work..sometimes only 100 milagrams sometimes even more..i stopped cold turkey...man did i go through some withdraws...one thing i hated about morphine was the constant itching..and yes your personality does change...you become edgie...Ive been clean now for almost 2 yrs...the doctor didn't give this morphine to me cause of any health probblems...a friend of mine was in a wheel chair for breaking his neck in 6 different places..I had no choice but to quit...my friend died on life support in the hospital..so his meds stopped

yes, unfortunately, I do.My mother took and was addicted to it for several years. She had no need for it, she just liked it. It really put my sister and I in hardship. Now I am an adult, and have a friend who is actually prescribed it.She is very annoying, but I'm not sure if it is because of what is going on with her, or the bad memories I have of my childhood.Morphine is a serious drug. Are there any alternatives for your friend?

naltrexane.or just slap her. people change all the time, and often irreversibly, particularly with drug use. it does get quite difficult to deal with some people, there's one close to me that flies off the rail at EVERY small thing, i just stay calm and dont argue untill she's a bit cooler. then we suss it out together.
