I'm sorry to hear about your family's dilemma.I am in methadone treatment currently, and have been for a year. I will tell you all I know!Heroin withdrawal is intense, it is the most painful thing I have ever felt in my life. The body aches make you feel like you have been hit by a semi. You have diarrhea, vomiting, rhinorrhea, lacrimation, and insomnia. The symptoms last from 2 - 8 weeks. It is unimaginable to anybody who has not experienced it.That being said, it is also important to understand it isn't your step daughter's fault that she is an addict. 99% of addicts have suffered severe emotional trauma in their lives, which led them to use. You seem to be understanding and compassionate, that's important in your girl's recovery.Since being in methadone treatment, I have quit smoking weed. I never had intentions on quitting, but the treatment led me down the right path. I have become an involved member of my campus community, an executive officer for an honor's society, I have taken up many new hobbies and I can really see my life going somewhere. Before I entered methadone treatment, I was begging for money on a street corner just so I could feel normal. I went into treatment just to get off heroin but I got so much more. I know weed isn't a big deal, but I've been smoking weed since I was 13 years old, it's been an enormous part of my life for over a decade. Now that I'm drug free, I can pay my bills and live a normal life. The only problem: I have to get off methadone some day! The withdrawal symptoms for methadone are intense. But, the treatment one receives at the clinic will change his/her life forever. She can get treatment outside of methadone treatment, but with methadone treatment, she is forced to see a counselor and meet with groups to work out her problems. I have seen it change so many peoples'lives for the better. A word of caution: Your step daughter will become physically dependant on methadone. She will need the drug every day to function normally. I pay $13 a day for my treatment and have not missed one day since I've been a patient there. It is well worth the money. Remember, she will have to come off it some day. I wouldn't worry about that now. I would worry about getting her the psychological care she needs and methadone treatment is a guarenteed way to do that! I hope I was help, if you have any more questions I would be glad to answer them. You can email me @
