Default What is the truth behind Methadone, regarding my husband? - 12-21-2008, 08:35 PM

Is methadone a drug that can affect your personality in a negative way? My husband is on 100mg a day for almost 3 years. He was addicted to pain pills at one time and now this. He is irresponsible and selfish. I believe that this is causing a lot of strain on our marriage. He says that the methadone does nothing but helps him from going into withdrawals and there is no problem with being on it for the rest of his life. Is this true and am I over reacting?

it is a drug like many others and it can have other side effects, but it is better than a drug addiction to unprescribed narcotics.

I don't think that methadone is intended for long-term use. I think it's generally prescribed to ease withdrawal symptoms in someone who is addicted to opiates or painkillers, but it too should be weaned as it is an addictive narcotic substance itself.

Methadone was made to help heroin addicts kick their habit. This can take a couple weeks to a couple months . It gets you high like heroin but it easier to make progressive steps with less and less. 100 mg. is up there for the most you can have . Sounds like he still wants to get high and will till you put your foot down Your enabling him

I was addicted to Hydrocodone and Oxycontin for 2 years.I never took Methadone, I just moved to another country and it has been 2 years.I had problems for a few months, but they faded away on their own. Now, 2 years later, I don't have any urge to take any kind of pill again.Your hubby is way overdue and is addicted, not in treatment!

methadone clinics, in my humble opinion, are simply trading one addiction for another.one is not clean and sober until they are exactly that... clean and sober.your husband traded one pain pill for another. only this time he gets it"legally".i ran around with this girl. we were best friends. we are both addicts. (opiate/pain pill addicts) i got arrested for passing a forged script one day. i went into rehab and got clean. she decided to go the methadone clinic route. she is not clean, she hangs out with heroin addicts (she has spiraled downward as we had not yet crossed that line when we were hanging out). she abuses the methadone and other forms of pain pills, still.i am against methadone clinics.the best thing your husband can do is go to detox and experience the wd's (yeah, they are hell. but, how is he ever going to get better?) and then transfer to rehab and learn the tools to stay clean.no. you are not overreacting. your husband is still on a pain pill that is most likely getting him high. where there is a will there is a way.

I'm so sorry to hear that you have to deal with this. My brother OD'd last year on Methadone. He complained of breathing problems prior to his demise. He needs to have a doctor wean him off of the drug slowly. Methadone is like heroin.
