I think they get addicted to methadone which is just as bad except it is provided to you for free. Another failed liberal attempt at social engineering.

both. you are hoping that it helps their heroine addiction and and the same time hoping they won't become addicted to the methadone.

You are just trading one addiction for another.I would prefer seeing methadone used as a step down for detoxification.

Well my baby daddy used to snort heroin and we tried to get him professional help. So we got him into a methadone out-patient treatment center; He was still high all the time. He would bring home his dose, eat and then drink small sips at a time. I started to realize the ugly truth. It didn't work! He just wanted more and more and suddenly like two weeks later he was back on the block getting high snorting again. I don't know of any other drug that is more hard to kick than heroin. He couldn't even stay off of it for more than three days. Well needless to say I left him shortly after and had our baby by myself and did my thing. 2 years later he killed 3 people in a dope sick state of mind and he was on his way to get me and my kids. They caught him and he is eligible for release in 2163!!! Please if this is you seeking treatment, may I suggest go inpatient or if you are concerned for a loved one.....stay clear. A heroin addict is dangerous and draining.

I always laugh at the word treatment when it comes to methadone because really it should be called methadone addiction. Users go from an illegal pusher to a legal one overnight and of course the drug companies earn a fortune too. Ask any ex user and they wont describe using methadone as getting high. Methadone is very difficult to come off of because the withdrawal symptoms are far greater. We can thank the NAZI's for methadone because it was developed for the battle field because germany's borders were closed and they could not get any morphine.Methadone alone is not of any benefit to users except reducing the criminal aspects of their use.Funding for proper treatment is dire to say the least and the government should fund more resources. In November 2005 last year i was unable to refer any clients onto residantial rehab because there was no funding until April 2006. How sad is that that even though people want to gave up using there is no help for them. After all it is cheaper for the government to give users methadone rather than spend up to £500.00 per week on resi-rehab.If the government really truly wanted to reduce crime and empty prisons over night all they need to do is implement decent rehabilitation pathways that actually help drug addicts. But they need crime and addiction to have soemthing to develop fear in society so they will get the votes that they need.Methadone can and does work sometimes but not nearly good enough, it is important to realise that it must be done with other alternatives such as Naltraxone and subutex as part of the detox program.

Methadone does not get you high. Addiction to opiates is a physical as well as a mental addiction. Opiate addiction is not limited to heroin. Oxycontin, hydrocodone, codieine, propoxylene and morphine to name a few are prescription opioid, and addictions to these meds are growing daily. There are physical symptoms when coming off off a opiate, and a person can also die when they are going through detox. The use of methadone in treatment can really help not only with the mental addiction but the physical addiction as well. The problem with methadone is the treatment providers. If they are only giving out methadone with out treatment then the odds are the addict will relapse or continue to use. There are new drugs that surpass methadone in helping with treatment of opiate addiction. Burenorphine is one such drug. Addiction to opiates can be dangerous during the hieght of the addiction and in treatment. Opiate addiction of addictions is the hardest to lick.

your just trading one addiction for another. ask any user and they'll tell you methadone or"juice"is better cause its legal. instead of changing habits we should spend that money on in-house treatment facility's so they can get off the street and into recovery.
