Xanax, Klonipin, Buspar...anti-anxiety meds that provide immediate relief...but they do not help with depression. And they can make you sleepier than normal...causing you to take more naps or sleep in longer, and it's well known that a depressed person cannot tolerate an over-abundance of sleep because too much can increase depression. If you experience adverse effects from antidepressant's, maybe you're just trying the wrong type. The newbies....Paxil, Wellbutrin, Prozac...those known as SSRI's, seem to cause a lot of people a lot of problems. Maybe you can try an older anti-anxiety/antidepressant such as Anafranil. In fact I know that where I work, there's a higher rate of success for people who take Anafranil vs SSRI's. I work in the healthcare field, and tend to see patients who become depressed or experience anxiety related to other medical conditions, like cancer...and they have much more success when they take older medications that have been around for years and years...not to mention, the non-SSRI meds don't have the same adverse reactions as the SSRI's do when it comes to treating other illnesses with other medications.
