Getting on new meds, going off Klonopin? -

My old Psychiatrist retired. I now have a new one. One thing I am concerened about is this: I have been taking Klonopin(generic), for yrs, but only take it now, once at night, 1mg. He says there shouldn't be a problem. He perscribed Neurontin300mg, once at night. And Wellbutrin150XL, once a day.I am depressed, and have insomnia. I told him I used to take Neurontin, and it would knock me out, so, I assume this is why he wants me to take that, instead of the Klonopin.Any thoughts, advice, experiences, with any of these drugs, let me know. But mostly, do u think I will have any problem, tonight, just not taking the Klonopin, and taking the Neurontin, instead?I plan to start the Wellbutrin tomorrow morning.I have been sneezing and have a runny nose, will taking any cold medicine interact with any of this stuff?I posted hours ago, has no replies- sometimes this boards moves so fast.He said taking only 1mg at night of Klonopin, was nothing, after such a long time, and I could just stop it, and take Nerontin at night, instead. He doesn't want me on anything addictive, although, I have been on the drug for years, by another shrink.
Well, I don't know much about neurontin, but I know plenty about Klonapin. If you are on something else to block anxiety , then you're unlikely to suffer losing your K because you have something to replace it with. I have terrible insomnia too. K doesn't put me to sleep, but it helps me turn my head off a bit at night (and my bladder too : ) )
Klonopin is a drug that should not be discontinued"cold". The dosage should be decreased slowly to prevent withdrawl symptoms. You say you have been on this"for years"...please get a second opinion on how to dc this medication. kjl
The reason that no one has responded to your post is probably because you are talking about older, generic drugs that people are not familiar with.If Klonopin worked for you, I am not sure why he made these changes, unless he is concerned about side effects. Wellburtin 150 is a small dose, so it should not have much of effect on your sleep patterns, especially the first night. However, Wellburtin has an effect on dopamine, which might cause you to have trouble sleeping. Usually, a physician will increase this to 300mg in a week. I am surprised that he did not try you on serequel (unless insurance is an issue). If you have benedryl it will help you to sleep.Honestly, I am not a doctor, but you might want to consider a second opinion. There is nothing wrong with this combination, as far as I know, but I think there are medications out there that might be easier on your body.Consider Serequel, Abilify, Riserdal, Invega, or possibly Geodon, but that would be my last choice.Hope this helps.
Well your dr obviously has no experience in extreme withdrawals caused by benzos. Even at 1mg, you could experience aweful symptoms of withdrawal, no drug in the world could knock you out because of it. I was on 1 mg for a couple years myself, and my evil dr's just took it away from me. I almost died. literally. I went through the worst week of my life. After going to the ER and explaining my situation, they put me back on the klonopin and taught me how to taper, safely. My friend, you must do a taper. The safest and most tolerable way to do it is to do a 20% reduction every 10 days. Nice and slow, and it will be successful. Without tapering, you are risking severe rebound insomnia, heart palpitations, losing touch with reality, suicidal tendencies, and seizure risks. Tell your dr that you tried going cold turkey and it just didn't work for you, so he could keep refilling the klonopin until you are off of it. I wouldn't suggest taking any cold meds with alcohol in it, as it could greatly interfere with the klonopin taper. Anything else would be fine for a cold. There are also many online support forums for tapering off of benzo's. Give it a look see, they helped me alot. Good luck, you can do it!
Klonopin is a very potent benzo, and after long term use it is advised to be carefully withdrawn over a period of months (ref. the Ashton Manual). 1mg of Klonopin is equivalent to 20mg Valium - which is not an amount to be taken lightly. If you read Professor Ashton's manual about benzos (aka'The Ashton Manual', linked below), then this should give you a lot of facts about benzos, long-term use&effects, and withdrawal tapers.I've linked you a couple of benzo sites where you can read more info / scientific works on benzo (e.g. Klonopin) withdrawal.
