Default switching from hydrocodone w/o Dr. thinking I'm a druggie?? - 12-31-2008, 05:35 AM

I've suffered with Back pain for years, it has gotten to the point where it hurts all the time so I went to a new family Dr. known for being liberal when prescibing pain meds.(NOT why I went to him!) The doc was very nice prescribed me physical therapy, gave me sleeping pills&then gave me a RX for 60 Vicodin without me even asking for them. Well 3 days later my 2 year old son got into them (when the babysitter was watching him)&he dumped them all in the toilet exept for about 4 of them. My daughter had an appt.that day so when I went I told him&although annoyed he gave me ANOTHER 60. The Vicodin are helping a LOT, but they've started killing my stomach. They make me feel so sick. I've tried eating with them etc. Nothing helps. How do I go about asking the Dr. for something different without him thinking I'm some sort of drug addict? (The original RX was written 1 week ago) I think it's the tylenol in the Vicodin, so I'd rather take a pain pill with ibuprofin. Any input will helpMy child got into the pain medication when the babysitter was here, the medicine was on my bathroom counter, and my kids aren't allowed in there. I won't use that babysitter again (obviously), I watched my son closely after finding out he got into the medication, and learned the hard way to keep it up. I'm not a bad mother, just happened to find out my son can open child proof tops the hard way. Also my aunt told me she used to be on a medication called Percodan which was a narcotic and ibuprofin.

There is no narcotic pain med that has ibuprofen in it. If you are in that much pain you need to go see a pain management doc and get this taken care of. Also it is usually the hydrocodone not the acetominophen that upsets the stomach. Since you prefer ibuprofen why not just try using a prescritpion dosage of ibuprofen or naproxen to control the pain. You also need to see someone to find out what is causing your pain and see if it something they can fix. My next question is how did your child get a hold of your narcotics???? Those should have been kept in a locked cabinet at all times.

If you don't want him to think you are abusing the drugs, take the old prescription with you to your appointment and give it to him.Simple.

There are a few other drugs on the market that might help with the pain. Ultram is a non narcotic pain relieving drug that acts like a narcotic in the system. There is also Ultracet, which is hydrocodone with ibuprofen instead of tylenol. As for asking the Doctor for a different prescription, that's a tricky one. The only way to do this is to be honest. Tell him the drug is too hard on your stomach and that you have taken it with food.It could be that the hydrocodone is being rough on your stomach. Usually tylenol is more gentle on the stomach than Ibuprofen.

sorry to hear about your pain. firstly, screw your doctor and what he thinks. his job is to feed people drugs, so his judgment at this point is irrelevant ESPECIALLY after he prescribed you vicodin before anything else.secondly, go get some acupuncture. it's great for pain management and although it might take a while, a decent acupuncturist will get to the root of your problem so that it completely goes away. your doctor seems interested in getting rid of your pain and getting you hooked on some stuff that will ruin the quality of your life, pain aside.

First off, I don't know why someone is telling you that there is no narcotic pain reliever with ibuprofen in it, cuz thats completely untrue. Vicoprofen is hydrocodone with ibuprofen, but it only comes in a 7.5/200 strength, so its a little stronger than normal vicodin. Other than that, your only other options with hydrocodone are lortab asa which is 5/500 with aspirin, or you can try norco's which come in 5/235 and 10/325, so, like if you're taking 2 vicodin 5/500s now, you can take 1 norco 10/325 and your tylenol intake drops from 1000mg to 325.What I would do, if I were you, is to be completely honest with your doctor. Tell him that the vicodin are helping with the pain, but are giving you some undesired side effects and you were wondering if he thought it was the hydrocodone or the acetaminophen in the vicodin, and if so, if maybe you could try something else. I mean, being completely honest is the best way to go, and he can give you your options, and if he questions you at all about potential abuse, you can tell him that you'll bring the pills in with you to show you havent used many. Just be honest, and he can help.Other than hydrocodone, your other options would probably be oxycontin (which he may not want to give since it's generally one of the more abused drugs) or demerol, which, while it may be a tad weaker than hydrocodone and doesnt have any NSIADs in them, it also may produce some different side effects such as, euphoria, decreased concentration and motor skills, so, it may or may not be better.Edit: I just saw your additional details about Percodan, that doesn't include ibuprofen, its oxycodone and aspirin.
