Default a question about becoming addicted to painkillers..? - 12-29-2008, 10:25 AM

at the start of november, one of my teeth chipped&i just ignored it because it didnt (at the time) seem to be causing any problems.. and then closer to thankgiving it began hurting and over time the pain got to the point where i broke down and went to the ER, and they gave me an antibiotic (to get rid of anything infections) and hydrocodone (sp?).. and they said that if it was abscessed, the antibiotic would rid me of the pain, and it didnt. so i went to my dentist, and he looked at it and said i didnt look to be infected but gave me another antibiotic&more hydrocodone (sp) .. and im still having pain, but it only seems to bother me when im settling down for the evening, and ive been having to take a painkiller ONLY at night to calm the pain down enough to get to sleep, and i've been taking them for 2 or so weeks, ONLY ONCE a day (in the evening).. and im just afraid to become addicted, i go to get my tooth pull on thursday 12/11&CANNOT wait! im just freaked out about becoming addicted.. i'd honestly rather labor&give birth unmedicated then go through the pain im having with my tooth. but do you think i sound like im becoming addicted or is taking one a day okay to deal with the pain..

i had a stomach perforation, and they put me on big painkillers, and they worked wonders, but coming off them was an absolute nightmare.it is possible to get addicted, but they can be beaten if you want to.the trick is not to get addicted in the first place.follow the instructions from your dr, and only take them when you cant stand the pain a minute longer.thats what i do now, and it works for me!

lol you're not going to become addicted.. once the pain is gone you won't have a reason to take them.. you should be fine hun!

It is scary.. it is easy to become addicted to pain killers. My mother had back surgery a year ago and after a few weeks of taking the pain killers she could feel herself starting to get addicted.. when she didn't have them her heart would start beating fast and she'd get shaky, she said it was the scariest feeling she's ever had so she stopped taking them all together and just decided to bear with the pain. Have you tried taking like advil/aleve instead.. call your dentist see if you can move up the appt, or research the drug online and see if it is addictive... good luck, and be safe!
