Default My husband is having back problems..can he take hydrocodone/APAP? - 12-22-2008, 02:30 AM

He has an old presecription of the hydrocodone from a prior foot injury from earlier in the year. He was having muscle aches in his back the past 2 days. Today he bent down to pick up his phone and his back locked. Eventually, he was able to stand up straight, but he is in pain. He has a doctor's appointment tomorrow morning and his chiropractor is away until Thursday.

Probably not a problem (short term), especially ifhe is planning to seek professional help. It probably would be best to take it with food.

Generally, if your husband was prescribed hydrocodone/apap for a prior problem you can be sure that it is okay for him to take it, but........ONLY if he keeps his appointment with his doctor tomorrow. When your body gives a pain signal it is a good way of letting us know something is wrong. The pain med doesn't fix it, it just dulls the pain until the problem can be fixed either by rest, surgery, heat, ice, etc. Taking the med for a new pain without having the problem checked by a physician is a dangerous thing to do. Taking the pain med to make him rest better until he can see his physician tomorrow is a reasonable thing to do.
