I have been taking Vicodin for many years for back problems/injury/surgery but stopped working after a while, due to tolerance. So my Dr. started me on Oxycodone which helped but I had severe itching and other bad side effects. My pain was so bad that she put me on Hydromorphone. It has not helped yet. I tried the minimum dose first and worked my way all the way up to the maximum dose my Dr. said I could take which is 12mg (not controlled or extended release) and all it does is give me a head ache and make me tired. Is this usual. Every person I have known or read about that has taken this, has always said things like"Oh it;s the miracle drug"or"This is the best pain reliever out there"or"Wow I feel like I'm in heaven instead of in pain"why do I have a head ache and won't it work?

I was on dilaudid in the hospital for three weeks given by injection and yes it did work great for me. It took away my pain and helped me relax. I was given dilaudid in pill form when I went home and it did nothing, I couldn't believe it was the same drug. I also went back on Vicodin. Each of our bodies react differently to each drug. I am having my 17 foot operation next week and I have been doing so much research on pain medication. I have been taking pain meds for years and only once did I experience withdraw. I just don't abuse this medication, I take the least as possible, just enough to take the edge off of my pain. This way I don't become dependent on these drugs. Living life in pain sucks. I just get so tired at times, it takes so much out of ones life. I hope you find the right pain med for you. Take care.
