Default Dilaudid and Lortab question? - 12-21-2008, 07:10 PM

My pain management Dr changed my pain meds from Vicodin to Dilaudid, he said its basically the same thing except dilaudid is stronger, its actually not helping as much as the vicodin did could it be the tylenol that was in the vicodin that helped more?

Dilaudid is hydromorphone, a much stronger pain med than vicodin. It may be that you were used to the mechanisms that took place when you took vicodin. If you are in pain, dilaudid should help take it away. Very good pain med in my opinion

I agree with the opinion above. I was on hydromorphone for a number of years and it helped me a great deal. I have been on almost every type of pain medication and I would have to say dilaudid is my number one pick. The only thing I don't like is the fact it only lasts for 4 hours.I'm not sure how long you've been on this but I would give it a couple of days. Everyone reacts differently to medications so if you're not getting the same releif that you were on vicondin then I would mention that to your doctor.Good luck

Dilaudid is much stronger then lortab.and should really help your pain more then the lortab but I have herd from a few ppl that lortab helps them better evan thougth Dilaudid is stronger.but diffrent medications work better for diffrent ppl I dont really think its the tylenol but it could be the whole chemical make up.but if the medication isnt helping you as much you should call your docter and switch back to what you were doing before.

Dilaudid is derived from Morphine and the components are slightly changed. It is considered to be a great pain reliever but has more side effects than Vicodin. My doctor prescribed me these as well saying the same thing. It didn't help me either. I went back on the Vicodin and I do think that the Tylenol augments (helps) the narcotic part of the drug. I was concerned about the amount of Tylenol I was taking though and asked my doctor for Norco which is the same thing as Vicodin but with much less Tylenol. If your on long term pain management I would suggest this so you won't destroy your liver and kidneys. It has 10mg of hydrocodone and only 325 mg. of Tylenol. As far as the Dilaudid...it is more addictive than Vicodin and is basically synthetic herion. But it comes down to this...whatever works better for you is what you should take. Life is too short to be in pain.
