Default Another question about Vicodin and being pregnant? - 12-18-2008, 12:28 AM

I was prescribed vicodin and am 25 weeks pregnant and have been getting some scary responses about taking it. People are saying that the baby could be addicted now and I am very upset. I took 2 per night for 4 nights straight and then stopped, and then now 2 weeks later I took one last night and one today for kidney stone pain. Do you think I have hurt the baby? Do you think he could be addicted right now with that much??My midwife told me it was okay and even prescribed me 30 more pills (which I have not taken) and I don't think I will take them anymore. I also cant go to the hospital either because when I get there for kidney stone pain they shoot me up with morphine and demerol. The pain is very extreme, but I'm scared for my babys life. Please only answer if you KNOW an answer and are not guessing. Also please don't assume I am taking them for nothing. Anyone who as had kidney stone pain knows that its the worst pain in the world.

Vicodin is category B the same as tylenol. I was prescribed vicodin as well because I have a pinched nerve. i asked my doc and she said it was fine as long as you don't over use it and you eat plenty while taking it.

It's going to be okay. I have kidney stones too, but I take Tylenol 3. I wish I had Vicodin, because the codeine in my meds isn't coming close to cutting the pain. Anyway, Vicodin is fine. Three different doctors told me that it would only hurt the baby if you took like 6-8 a day for like a month. So a couple a day is just fine. Your doc/midwife wouldn't give you anything that would hurt the baby. And trust me, being in pain from the kidney stones is more of a risk for the baby. I passed stones 2 different times this summer and was in such bad pain that contractions started and they had to stop them.

Yes, vicodin is safe to take while pregnant. Of course only take as little as needed but I know you already know that. My doctor gave me a list of drugs/medicine that are safe to take while pregnant and vicodin is on there.

I have taken vicodin with 3 of my pregnancies and the kids are all fine. It is safe for both you and the baby and is actually one of the most commonly prescribed pain pills for pregnant women. Take the pills if you are in pain, just don't over do it.

Trust your Dr. If it was bad for the baby they would have prescribed . something different. It is probably better for the baby for you to not be in excruciating pain, and I know how bad it is because I've had kidney stones in the past.Take your medicine when you feel you really need it and try to reduce the stress on your body. Taking medication, even a narcotic, for several days is not going to make your baby addicted. Most women who experience problems with having their babies addicted are long term users and/or abusers of vicodin.Try to trust your Dr and Midwife and stop reading internet articles and listening to people who are just trying to scare you about taking Vicodin during pregnancy.Good luck and feel better.
