Default Had anyone gotten Pitocin and Demerol at the same time? - 12-28-2008, 07:11 AM

Sorry is Pitocin is spelt wrong...I was just wondering if anyone has gotten both of these at the same time during labor and if so what happened. I had this done during my first pregnancy and afterwards my blood pressure dropped dramatically, I passed out, and everyone (nurses and the doctor) told me I almost died. Did this happen to anyone else?I was wondering because I really want an epidural this time around (28-weeks pregnant). We're so tight with finances that we're not sure if we can afford the epidural. It was so painful the first time and medicaid here won't pay for the epidural unless I have an emergency C-Section. I don't know what to do. I just have a feeling that I'll have to do without one and I'm scared!!Just don't know what else to do. I don't know if the combination of the drugs almost killed me or if maybe the Demerol might help me get through this pregnancy (during labor). I wish they had another painkiller for labor that won't hurt the baby or myself. Thanks!I'm not expecting to get Pitocin this time around. I know what this drug does. My water broke around 4am and at 10am, my contractions slowed down and the baby wasn't making any progress. So they had to give me Pitocin to speed things up. They told me,"if by 4pm the baby isn't here, they'd have to do an Emergency C-Section."The baby arrived at 3:48pm..I live in Mississippi and last I heard during my first pregnancy Medicaid won't pay for Epidural's, unless it's an emergency c-section.I'm just afraid I'll have to stick with Demerol or something else they could give me. My labor the first time was horrible! I screamed during my labor and was in so much pain. I'm just afraid this will happen again.

Don't let them give you either. Both can be responsible for the reaction you had. The combination is even more dangerous both for you and baby. There are plenty of natural pain relief methods that can be used before any drugs are tried. Most drug free methods for labor pain relief work better, cause less stress to your body and your baby and give you a healthier baby and mother with a faster recovery from birth.Free labor secrets below that will help you have a more positive birth experience the second time around. I did and that didn't happen to me. Drop in blood pressure is pretty common though and I doubt you almost died, whoever told you that is exaggerating. I can't believe medicaid will not pay for that. It does here... hopefully they don't adopt that policy! Some hospitals do not give demerol at all anymore they switched to something call stadol (not sure on the spelling).

Medicaid won't let you have an epidural there? YOUR kidding!I used Medicaid with my son and they allowed me to have one. I'd call the DHS and speak them about it and find out where you can discuss this issue. If you honestly think you cannot make it without one. . . well, they should give it to you.
