My sister was prescribed Demerol for post c-section pain. But she's a breast feeding new mommy! The baby has been in the hospital for 3 days now with vomiting, diarrhea, and dehydration. She's also lost almost a pound and was only 6 pounds to begin with. She's only 8 days old today. They've just now put her on formula, and are having my sis pump and dump. IF this does turn out to be why she was such a perfect baby who doesn't wake up at night and never cries (yes, that was sarcasm, there is something wrong with a lethargic baby) what lasting effects could she have?

First of all -Mostly all babies lose weight in the first two weeks of life. I never breastfed but I have a friend who did and had demoral for c section and no negative effects on the babies. I dont think the baby will have any lasting effects.

I was prescribed Demerol of post-c-section pain relief as well. My milk supply was delayed slightly because of it. My daughter did get constipated because of it and slightly lethargic. I really haven't heard of all of those symptoms to a baby from Demerol.

Any drug is bad for a baby, including the epidural. They also probably gave her the hepatitis vaccine immediatly upon birth, which has been causing a lot of problems in newborns, including SIDS. I'm not trying to scare you, but giving a child this tiny any drugs into their tiny little system isn't good. Funny how they don't want you to feed real food, but think that heavy duty drugs is just fine. The baby may just be having an allergic reaction to the Demerol. And as far as being lethargic, my 2nd one was born 22 years ago today at 7:50 in the morning and we were home by 8 pm that night. She slept all night right from birth. And I went all natural. I don't believe in chemicals in your system because it is so harmful to your body. She may just be a very easy baby to handle. Not all of them are like that.
