What can you do for pain during childbirth besides an epidural?

Are there any pain medications a doctor can safely give to a woman in labor? My mom got a Demerol drip when she gave birth to me. Are narcotics like that safe? Are they widely used on women who don't want an epidural?A lot of people ask why I don't want an epidural. A needle anywhere else is fine, but a needle in the spine... the thought alone makes me instantly nauseous.

I had a shot in the lower back. It was the same medication as an epidural but it was a single dose. Other than that you might want to look into some breathing techniques.

yes. they are used alot when momma doesn't want the epidural. To be honest, the demeral was the only thing I could think of for pain, but it only takes the edge off for so long. If you can handle big pain...then demeral is great. If you only wanna feel pressure and no pain, get the epidural. Congratulations sweety!
