Default Can Oxycontin be taken safely without addiction? - 12-28-2008, 01:17 PM

After years of taking codeine based painkillers,I have been perscribed 80mgs per day of Oxycontin for the past 4 weeks. I initially reduced the dose myself to 40mgs however had to increase the dose as perscribed. Each morning I have sweats and laboured breathing and of an evening I have muscle cramps and insomnia however when I take the tablet all of this disappears. I am not sure what is going on? The drug works well to alleviate the pain and I feel no high as such but am very scared of becoming addicted and heading down a disastorous path that so many describe. Can oxycontin be taken safely or should I stop now and try an alternative?

I don't think so, that is why its such a hot"street drug"people pay upwards of $50 a pill.It kind of sounds like you are already addicted to the drug. I would ask the doctor their thoughts on it.

I take Oxycontin occasionally - maybe once or twice a month for back and leg pain. I constantly read about people overdosing on Oxycontin so this is the reason why I only take it when I need it.What are you taking the tablets for?The good thing is that you are aware that oxycontin is addictive and can cause disastrous effects. You should go back to your doctor and explain to him what you are feeling (sweats, muscle cramps etc) and have him put you on something else for your pain.

this is a very powerful narcotic, and really is good for severe pain. The symptoms you describe sound like withdrawl symtoms,no,your not a drug addict its normal if your not sure of your dose your meant to take.Find a good Doctor that you feel comfortable with and speak to him/her about what mg keeps you pain free and stick to that.If you alter or god forbid stop taking a narcotic pain killer it could have very serious side affects.Because you have gone down and up in your taking of the tablets your all over the place. Please try not to self medicate as Doctor will talk to you and get on a pain control programme that your both happy with and the side effects your feeling will definately disappear and your pain will go and will be managed.Good luck

From personal experience, you can not take Oxycontin on a regular basis&not have your body become addicted to it (Also 80 MG is a lot daily). That is why when you stop taking the drug, you have to be weaned off of it&not just stop taking it. The problems that you are describing are definitly withdrawal symptoms. If this is a drug that you MUST stay on daily, then you will need to speak with your doctor&reach a decision on the MG&make certain that you take the pills spaced evenly throughout the day. Not doing this is what will set your body off. I take a narcotic pain killer daily (and have for years), I take 4 per day, one every 6 hours. If I mess it up, trust me, my body lets me know! Is there possibly another medication that you could take that would not have addictive side affects for you? Talk with your doctor about it. There are many different medications available today. Unfortunately, for me, the others don't work.
