Default Can ibuprofen and codeine be taken together safely? - 12-21-2008, 11:11 PM

My fiance'is sick, and the doctor gave him a cough syrup with codeine in it. He has a high fever and I gave him ibuprofen. Are these two drugs safe together, or could there be a problem? He is almost ready for his next dose of cough syrup. He is also on a Z-Pack antibiotic and taking breathing treatments and taking his inhaled as needed. He has been to the hospital once, and the doctor twice and only seem to be getting worse. I am really concerned and not sure what else I can do.

There is no specific contraindication to taking both codeine and ibuprofen together, in fact these are marketed in a combination pill form that is generically available.Oxycodone, the more powerful variant of codeine is also marketed as a mixture with ibuprofen.Try to avoid mixing different kinds of non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (ibuprofen, acetaminophen, aspirin, naproxen, etc.), unless under direct supervision by a physician, because their toxicity can be multiplied. However, narcotics and NSAIDS can be mixed without unforseen consequences.

There should be no problems with any obvious or usual drug interactions, so you're perfectly justified in giving it a whirl. Note that individually codeine, ibuprofen, or azithromycin can cause abdominal pain, nausea, and other gut-related side-effects.

Codeine is sometimes marketed in combination preparations with paracetamol (acetaminophen) as co-codamol (best known in North America as Tylenol 3), with aspirin as co-codaprin or with ibuprofen. These combinations provide greater pain relief than either agentCommon adverse drug reactions associated with the use of codeine include itching, nausea, vomiting, drowsiness, dry mouth, miosis, orthostatic hypotension, urinary retention and constipation.[3]Tolerance to many of the effects of codeine develops with prolonged use, including therapeutic effects. The rate at which this occurs develops at different rates for different effects, with tolerance to the constipation-inducing effects developing particularly slowly for instance.A potentially serious adverse drug reaction, as with other opioids, is respiratory depression. This depression is dose-related and is the mechanism for the potentially fatal consequences of overdose.Another side effect commonly noticed is the lack of sexual drive.Codeine has also been known to interact negatively with some psychiatric medications such as reboxetine and venlafaxine. Some people may also have an allergic reaction to codeine, which may cause severe illness or even death.Take a allergy test, i suggest
