Default What is the difference between a cocaine habit and addiction? - 06-16-2009, 08:36 PM

A friend of mine does cocaine (always around 6 lines) on average one night a week, and only when she's going out (she's my best friend and my roommate, so I'd know if she were lying). I've done drugs before and I'm not judge mental of her, because I don't think she's out of control... she never does it sober, only does it when she's out/socially and doesn't crave it. Furthermore, she's been doing the same amount consistently for about a year, never going over that amount since she started. However, when I was talking to my boyfriend about it, he seemed to think it was a lot. At what point does doing cocaine occasionally/for fun become a habit? And at what point does a habit become an addiction?

I guess I'm just wondering how much and how often somebody needs to be doing coke to cross the line between fun and habit, and habit and addiction..?
Hey guys, it's called reading, a skill I assumed you had mastered. Not EVERY NIGHT for a year, ONCE A WEEK for a year.

Sorry, but your friend has long sense crossed the line between fun and addiction. Every night for a year and probably more? That isn't for fun. That is habitual and almost certainly addiction. No questions asked.

basically and addiction constitutes requiring a substance (in this case coke) in order to function. doing anything once a week, drinking, smoking (whatever), coke. nah that's just for fun. and 6 lines does seem excessive for 1 go, but if she isn't doing it daily, then i wouldn't say it's an addiction.

Fun is when it shows up at a friends house and you join in

Habit is when you and your friends buy it on weekends or party nights

Addicted Habit is when you go out a crave for it.

Addicted is when you're constantly consingnAFT, every weekend, every party and a good portion of your paycheck goes to coke!

An addiction is where your hooked, it's very hard to get off the substance and you have to use substitutes instead of the coke. A habit you do it optional your not hooked and can get off any day.

A habit is psychological, the person wants the coke and might even think they need it but really dint. Almost everybody has television/Internet habit for example, think how hard it would be to give up TV for the rest of your life, quitting coke is even harder!

An addiction is when your body actually requires the drug and you will get ill or maybe even die if you don't get it. Opioids and Benzedrine'sNewes examples.

6 lines does seem a little much to call it just being fun. But since it's not every other day, and if you're sure she can control herself by disciplining herself to only have six, it doesn't sound like addiction YET.
Sounds like a habit to me. But they all turn easily given the right circumstances.

I don't see anything wrong with maybe once a month, but if you really care about her, and it seems like you do..... Try to help her cut back before it actually does get out of hand.
It's not the worst drug out there, but it can still drag you down.
