Addiction:
when he can't be without it even when he's on his own
when he has medical side effects when he can't have it
when its the only thing he can think about
When he can't go for more than a month without it (a week is more than enough, but I like to test the stamina)
when his body craves for it

I'd suggest if he uses it every day- he's an addict

if he only uses it at weekends,then maybe it's social

but because it is so addictive, he'll probably progress to more regular use

Why don't you help him quit altogether while he's not totally addicted

Sorry but you are all talking rubbish when you say that you cant use a drug socially! you obviously have never been in the situation and therefore dint really have the right to comment. I have friends who may use the drug on a night out, barely once every two months so i really dint think that constitutes a "huge addiction".

In answer to your question chick, you will know as he will use it most nit es, becomes depressed, maybe aggressive. You need to nip it in the bud if you think it is more serious that a couple of nights during the year! good luck
