I would suggest sitting down with him and telling him how concerned you are and how he is not only hurting himself but everyone around him. Tell him that you are not going to abandon him, but that you want him to consider your points. Stay clear of insults, like "you are addicted" and such, as that can breed defense lock down. I would suggest getting more of his friends involved; the more support he has, the better. Get him a book if you want, but it will take more than that to get this sort of addiction solved, and possibly long-term rehab. Depending on the severity of the addiction, he has a long road ahead, but everything is do-able. Stay positive!
